Kerkrade
Kerkrade(Kerkraads: Kirchroa, German: Kirchrath) is a Dutch municipality in the Eastern Mining Area in South Limburg. Adjacent municipalities include Heerlen and Landgraaf and the German municipality Herzogenrath. Kerkrade is part of the administrative partnership plus region Parkstad Limburg. Kerkrade consists of the eponymous town of Kerkrade, and the towns of Eygelshoven, Spekholzerheide, Chvremont and Bleijerheide.
The suffix rade or red means "grubbing up" or "reclamation" and refers to the verb grubbing up: the felling and cultivation of wooded areas. The following can be added. The oldest form of this was roda. The soccer club Roda JC and the Rodahal are named after it. A border village in the municipality is called Haanrade (from Hanrothe or Hagenrode), of which the prefix Haan is traced to a person (Hago), but also to the word hedge (fence). The name Kaalheide also refers to the uprooted Kerkrade landscape.
Kerkrade was part of Rode ('s-Hertogenrode or 's-Hertogenrade) in the Brabant country of Overmaas. At the dissolution of the Lower Mesa department as a result of the Congress of Vienna on April 5, 1815, 's-Hertogenrade itself was assigned to Prussia, but Kerkrade was separated from it and remained Dutch territory. The latter only happened more than a year later on June 26, 1816 with the Treaty of Aachen. A few years later Belgium declared its independence and made Kerkrade Belgian territory. Kerkrade only became Dutch territory again on 19 April 1839 as a result of the Treaty of London.
Together with Herzogenrath Kerkrade once again formed a symbolic (but now Dutch-German) unity as the European city of Eurode.
